Klangwelt Toggenburg: When the Mountains Begin to Sing

If you stay with us at Stay with Louisa in the historic SutterSport house at Hauptstrasse 36 in Alt St. Johann, you are perfectly placed: the bus stop is just two minutes’ walk from the house, so you can set off into the day with ease even without a car. The Klangwelt itself lies up on the mountain: you take the cable railway from Alt St. Johann up to Alp Selamatt (or from Unterwasser via Iltios), and the Klangweg runs along the heights up there. The Klanghaus stands at Schwendisee above Unterwasser and Wildhaus and is easily reached by car or rail. And on days when the weather isn’t entirely on your side, the Klangwelt reveals its particular charm.

The Klanghaus at Schwendisee: Architecture that Sounds

By the still waters of Schwendisee above Unterwasser and Wildhaus, which you reach by car or rail, stands a building unlike any other. The Klanghaus is a timber building that opened in 2024 and was designed from the ground up to become an instrument in its own right. The curved walls, the tall rooms, the warm material: everything is made to gather sound, to carry it and to pass it on. You step into a room and feel how your own voice, a single note, a breath, suddenly takes on a different quality.

It is a place for the curious. For people who like to pause and, just once, experience something that cannot be pressed into a photograph. Lovers of culture will find concerts and events here in an acoustic you won’t encounter anywhere else. And because the Klanghaus is indoors, it makes the ideal outing for grey hours. When mist settles over Schwendisee, that isn’t bad weather at all, but the loveliest backdrop of all.

The Klangweg: Walking and Listening at Once

Perhaps the best-known part of the Klangwelt is the Klangweg. This 7.5 km themed trail runs up on the mountain, from Alp Selamatt via Iltios to Wildhaus, and reopened in 2024. Along its 27 sound objects you keep coming across unusual sound installations and stations that invite you to try them out. You strike, stroke, pluck and listen, and with every step the walk becomes a game. For families with children it is a small wonder: instead of asking when you’ll finally arrive, the question suddenly becomes which station comes next.

The Klangweg brings together, in the most wonderful way, everything Toggenburg stands for. Slow Travel in the best sense. You are outdoors, in the clear mountain air, surrounded by meadows and woodland, and yet there is always something to discover, to do, to hear. The cable railway from Alt St. Johann up to Alp Selamatt gets you to the top and right into it in no time, without any long journey. No crowds, no queues, no throngs of people. That is exactly what so many people come to us looking for and often miss in nearby Appenzell: the same beauty, only quieter.

The Klangschmiede: Craft You Can Get Your Hands On

If you’d like to go deeper still, the Klangschmiede offers a third way into the Klangwelt. Here the focus is on craft, on making things yourself, on trying things out. It is a place where sound becomes tangible, in the most literal sense. Especially for families, and for anyone who enjoys working with their hands, it is a welcome complement to the Klanghaus and the Klangweg. Together the three make a rounded whole: to listen, to walk, to create for yourself.

The lovely thing about the Klangwelt Toggenburg is that it opens itself to everyone. To the child striking a sound bar for the very first time. To the grandparents sitting on a bench and simply listening. To the culture-lover who travels in for the acoustics.
