Säntis: a trip to the king of eastern Switzerland

There are mountains you know without ever having stood on top of them. The Säntis is one of them. Its distinctive head with the tower rises above the whole of eastern Switzerland, and sooner or later you find yourself down in the valley, looking up and thinking: we have to go there. When you stay with us in Toggenburg, that is a lovely day to plan, one big outing among a lot of quiet ones. But let’s be honest right away: the Säntis is not right on our doorstep. It’s a drive away, and that only makes it more worth it.

Please note, July 2026: the Säntis cable car is out of service from 1 May until late autumn 2026 while the railway is being renewed, and the summit station and the summit restaurant stay closed during that time. On the Schwägalp, the hotel, the restaurants and the hiking trails remain open. What makes the Säntis so special

At 2,502 metres, the Säntis is the highest and most unmistakable peak of the Alpstein massif. Where the Churfirsten lie like one long ridge, the Säntis stands on its own, a single, clear point on the horizon that you can recognise from half the country. That is exactly what makes it the quiet king of eastern Switzerland.

The loveliest part for families, and for anyone who likes things easy: you don’t have to climb or hike for hours to reach the top. The Säntis cable car carries you up from the Schwägalp to the summit in just a few minutes. No sweat, no rucksack stress. You step into the cabin, the valley grows smaller, and suddenly you’re right at the top.

And then there’s the view, the reason you come up in the first place. On a clear day, so it’s said, the panorama takes in six countries, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, France and Italy. Whether you really see them all on your day depends on the weather. But even the sheer openness, your gaze wandering over hills, lakes and distant Alpine ranges, is something that stays with you. At the top there’s a summit restaurant and a viewing terrace: a good place to take your time rather than turn straight back around.

Honestly planned: a drive from the valley

Now the honest part, because a good day starts with a little planning. From us in Alt St. Johann, the Schwägalp is a drive away, a run through the countryside, over towards Appenzell and up to the valley station. Nothing far, but not something you’ll reach on foot from the front door either. The day is loveliest when you don’t rush it and take the drive itself as part of the outing.

The single most important thing with a mountain like the Säntis is the weather. Up here it turns quickly, sunshine one moment, then the mist rolls in and the great view vanishes into cloud. So it’s worth a quick look at the webcam and the forecast in the morning before you set off. If it’s clear, go. If everything’s grey, simply save the Säntis for another day, on dull days Toggenburg has plenty else that’s worth your time.

And pack warm. Even when it’s mild down in the valley, at 2,502 metres the wind is fresh and the air noticeably cooler. A jacket, sturdy shoes and an extra hat for the children in the rucksack. Then you’ll enjoy the terrace up top instead of shivering. That’s how the outing becomes the wow-day you’re picturing.

One big day among many quiet ones

In the end, that’s exactly why the Säntis fits so well into a slow Toggenburg holiday: it’s the one great highlight you treat yourself to, and afterwards you return to the calm of the valley. A day up in the open, with the panorama and the fresh mountain air. And by evening you’re back down where it’s quiet and no one wants anything from you.

That’s the whole idea behind Hidden Switzerland, like Appenzell, only quieter. Not one highlight after another, but a few lovely, strong moments with plenty of space in between. The Säntis is one of those moments.
