Skiing in Toggenburg: the family ski area at the Chäserrugg, ski-in/out from the doorstep

There are winter mornings when you’d rather not plan a thing. Get up, make a coffee, step into your ski boots, and there you are, standing in the snow. That’s exactly how a ski day feels with us in Alt St. Johann. No travel stress, no hunting for a parking space, no long walks clattering across the asphalt in ski boots. Skiing in Toggenburg is one of the most relaxed corners we know: family-friendly, easy to take in, and a little quieter than the big names. A bit like Appenzell, only stiller.

If you stay with us in Louisa’s Loft or Gallery in the historic SutterSport building at Hauptstrasse 36, winter begins quite literally at the front door. The valley station of the Selamatt lift is just about 300 metres away. That’s why we can honestly talk about ski-in/ski-out from the doorstep, with no exaggeration at all.

Ski-in/ski-out: the easiest ski day of your life

The Selamatt is our home mountain, and for families it feels tailor-made. From the valley station, practically in the village, you ride up into a friendly, wide-open hiking and ski area. The slopes are broad and good-natured, nothing crowds you, nothing rushes you, exactly the kind of terrain where children and beginners find their confidence.

And the short distances make all the difference. The ski school and the children’s paradise are only about 200 metres from us, close enough that you can drop the little ones off in the morning and pop home at lunchtime to warm up. The cross-country trail actually begins practically right outside the house, around 10 metres from the door. If you’d rather ski cross-country than downhill, you clip in and set off without ever getting into the car.

Anyone who’s done it will recognise the feeling: it’s exactly this closeness that makes a family winter easy. Tired little legs, forgotten gloves, a nap in between, none of it a drama when the apartment is just a few steps away. You can store your skis with us, by the way; there’s a place for them, so the evenings don’t end with everything dripping in the living room.

The Chäserrugg and the bigger loop

Alt St. Johann, Unterwasser and Wildhaus together form the Toggenburg winter sports region, so when you’re in the mood for more mountain, more altitude and the big descents, all of it is within reach. The Chäserrugg, at 2,262 metres, is the region’s flagship peak, and the panorama across the Churfirsten is an experience in itself.

Here an honest word is worth it, because the geography often gets muddled: you do not reach the Chäserrugg directly from the Selamatt lift. The summit is accessed from Unterwasser, first the funicular up to Iltios, then the cable car onwards to the Chäserrugg. Unterwasser is only a few minutes from us, by car or easily by bus and train. So these are two different lifts: the Selamatt right outside the door for the easy-going family day, and the Chäserrugg over in Unterwasser for the long descents and the grand mountain cinema.

We love exactly this mix. You could stay a whole week and never have the same day twice, sometimes quiet and close to home, sometimes high up and wide open.

The loveliest part comes after the skiing

Honestly: for us, the moment the skis are propped in the corner is almost the best of the day. Outside the light turns blue and then dark; inside it grows warm. And then you climb into the private outdoor hot tub, out in the snow, steam rising off the water and a sky full of stars above you. Your cheeks are still glowing from the wind, your legs pleasantly tired. This is winter the way it should be.

Afterwards, a fondue in the apartment, with no need to head out again. The caquelon bubbles, the children are finally hungry, and the evening stretches out nicely. Both apartments have their own hot tub: Louisa’s Loft for up to 5 guests (plus a cot), and Louisa’s Gallery for up to 6 (plus a cot) with the large bubbling tub. It’s just two minutes to the bus and the grocery shop, a good winter day doesn’t need more than that.

And the best part: all of this lies only about an hour from Zürich. Close enough for a long weekend, lovely enough to stay much longer.
