Autumn Half-Term with Kids in Toggenburg: A Rain-or-Shine Week

Autumn half-term in Switzerland with kids lives and dies by the weather, and October can swing from golden sunshine to grey fog in a single day. In 2026 the holiday weeks sit close together, and that is what puts Toggenburg within reach for so many families. St. Gallen is off from 27 September to 18 October, Zurich from 5 to 18 October, and Thurgau also from 5 to 18 October. The biggest overlap falls in the first and second week of October.

Two things follow from that. First, all three cantons are around an hour away, so you are here quickly. Second, because so many families are off at the same time, the popular weeks fill up fast. If October is your plan, it pays to book early rather than late.

Fair-weather days outdoors

On clear autumn days the valley is yours. The sound trail between Alt St. Johann and Wildhaus is made for children: There are instruments to try along the way, and the walking feels almost like play. If you want to go higher, take the Chäserrugg cable car, which runs daily until 25 October in 2026 and then on a weather-dependent schedule until 1 November. At the top you get a wide view and the summit restaurant on the Chäserrugg for lunch.

Quieter but just as lovely is the easy family walk to the Schwendisee. The little mountain lake sits tucked between forest and peaks, a swimming spot in summer and a calm place to stroll in autumn. Rainy-day plan without the boredom

When the rain comes, the mood does not have to come down with it. The Klanghaus and the Klangwelt Toggenburg at the Schwendisee are a hands-on experience where young and old make their own sounds and try things out, sheltered from the weather yet still right in the middle of the region.

Some rainy days, though, need no programme at all. An afternoon of games and crafts in the apartment, a warm drink, and later your own whirlpool: For many families that is the quietly best day of the trip.
