Toggenburg instead of Appenzell: the quieter hidden gem, an hour from Zürich

You’re planning a few days in Switzerland, you’ve seen a photo somewhere of green hills and rugged rock, and the name Appenzell has stuck in your mind. That’s understandable, it really is beautiful there. But perhaps you already sense that the best-known corners are also the busiest. This is exactly where an answer comes in that many people only discover on second glance: Toggenburg. A quiet valley on the other side of the very same mountain massif, giving you almost everything you’d travel to Appenzell for, just a shade calmer.

The same beauty, only quieter

First, the biggest misconception: Appenzell and Toggenburg aren’t opposites. They literally share the same mountain range, the Alpstein, with the Säntis (2502 m) as its landmark peak. Places you dream of, like the Saxerlücke, are just as close from either side. So if you’re coming for that landscape, the steep rock faces, the mountain lakes, the wide ridge walks, you’ll find it here just the same. Only up top you’ll often stand at the same viewpoint with far fewer people around you.

On top of that, there’s something only Toggenburg has: from the valley floor you look out at the Churfirsten, that unmistakable mountain chain rising like a row of steep teeth above Lake Walen. And right behind our village stands the Schafberg. It’s the same alpine drama that makes Appenzell so loved, just from a different, quieter angle. We don’t want to take anything away from Appenzell, it’s famous for good reason. We’re simply saying: the same picture-postcard Switzerland exists one valley over, with more room to breathe.

What surprises you in Toggenburg

People who come here for the first time expect beautiful mountains, and are then surprised by how much more the valley holds. Take the cheese. Toggenburg is a genuine Cheese Valley, a landscape where dairy farming isn’t folklore but everyday life. In Lichtensteig you’ll find Willi Schmid, one of the best cheesemakers in the world, a champion of his craft whose creations are sought after well beyond the region. A visit here is one of those small, real moments that carry a trip.

Then there’s the Klangwelt Toggenburg, a quiet work of art made up of a sound trail, a sound house and a sound workshop, turning a day’s walk into a journey through tones. You won’t find anything quite like it elsewhere. And because life ticks along more slowly up here, the valley is naturally family- and dog-friendly. Not a polished holiday resort, but real village life: the shop around the corner, the cow in the meadow, the bus that arrives on time. It’s exactly this mix of nature and everyday life that many guests suddenly miss once they’re back home.

How easy it is

The loveliest argument for Toggenburg might be the most unspectacular one: it’s remarkably easy to reach. From Zürich you’re about an hour away by car, roughly an hour and a half from the airport. And you don’t need a car at all: Alt St. Johann is well connected by public transport, and the bus stop is just two minutes’ walk from our house, with the village shop right next door. So you can set off from Zürich in the morning and be walking barefoot across a meadow by the afternoon.

That’s exactly what makes the valley such a relaxed base. No changeover stress, no endless journey, no battling for parking at crowded hotspots. You arrive, you settle into the calm, and you still have the whole mountain world on your doorstep. Slow Travel in the best sense often begins with the simple fact that getting there is easy.
